Silica Gel Applications

Silica gel is a desiccant, or moisture absorber, that has many uses, including:

• Preventing Spoilage: Used in store-bought products like food packaging, electronics, and medication bottles to prevent damage from humidity.
• Protecting Documents: Keeps documents like birth certificates and photographs from sticking together or discoloring.
• Preventing Rust: Helps prevent rust stains on items like razors and nail clippers.
• Keeping Gym Bags Fresh: Absorbs moisture from sweaty clothes, socks, and shoes.
• Protecting Seasonal Items: Prevents mold and mildew growth in camping gear, seasonal clothes, and footwear.
• Keeping Jewellery and Silverware from Tarnishing: Absorbs excess moisture in the air to help prevent tarnishing.
• Keeping Books Dry: Helps keep books dry and less musty by storing them with silica packets.

Silica gel is made from silicon dioxide, a compound found naturally in sand. It can absorb up to 40% of its own weight. To reuse silica gel, you can put it in a 250°F oven for 1-2 hours.
